LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Marathon season is picking up in Louisville, and doctors are reminding runners to take steps to prevent common injuries during training.
The Louisville Triple Crown of Running continues this weekend with the 10K race. The series helps runners prepare for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon later this spring.
Doctors said runners often experience overuse injuries during marathon training. Common problems include knee pain, Achilles tendon injuries, shin splints and stress fractures.
Those injuries can affect both experienced runners and beginners. New runners are especially vulnerable if they try to do too much too soon.
"Consistency is better than intensity, focusing on getting your body up to speed," Dr. David Neuberger said.
"Then as you get more used to that, both your muscles and your heart, you get a little more comfortable and can start to ramp your mileage up."
With major races approaching, medical experts say careful preparation now can help runners stay healthy as they work toward the starting line.
