FLOYD CENTRAL, Ind. (WDRB) -- Senior night at Floyd Central was bittersweet Thursday, marked by memories, grief, and resilience. For the Highlanders, this year has been one of heartache — but also of unity, symbolized by the color orange.
Before the game, the crowd observed a moment of silence for Noah Maddox, a junior last year who wore number 24 and loved the color orange. His picture, displayed on the field, reminded everyone that this young man wouldn’t be joining them on senior night this year.
“It’s been a harder year than usual,” said Mason Roberts, his voice heavy with emotion.
Daniel Robertson, whose children attend FC, added “It has been really tough this year, but the kids are doing really well … Kids are resilient.”

Bryce Gerlach, 18, was shot and killed at Harvest Homecoming on Oct. 12, 2024.
The grief is compounded by the loss of Bryce Gerlach, who was killed in a crossfire at Harvest Homecoming one year ago. Gerlach was originally part of Floyd Central’s program, but remained at Corydon Central due to IHSAA rules.
The orange worn by players and supporters stands for more than school spirit — it’s a symbol of action against gun violence. Many in the crowd wore “Live Like Bryce” shirts, honoring Gerlach’s memory.
Despite the heavy emotions, the Highlanders performed strongly on the field, scoring with ease and beating Jennings County 63-0. Yet the game itself was secondary to the memories being honored.
“Noah was loving and caring … if you reached out to him, he would be there for you,” said one teammate. “The spirit of Noah and the memory of Bryce waved in the sea of orange tonight. It is something that carries with me all my life.”
Senior night at Floyd Central was a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, community, friendship, and resilience shine through.
