LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four Jefferson County Public Schools are set to get a new kind of vending machine.
The vending machines, which will be unveiled on Tuesday, are full of books. The vending machines will be placed at Hazelwood, Chancey, Engelhard and Atkinson elementary schools.
"These new vending machines will promote literacy, encourage reading habits, and foster accessibility, diversity, and inclusion among our students," Lynn Reynolds, JCPS director of library services, said in a news release. "With just the touch of a button, students can embark on literary adventures, discovering new worlds, perspectives, and ideas."
The goal of the "Book Nook" is to grow students' love of reading. Students earn tokens and use them to buy a book from the machine.
Reynolds said an anonymous donor purchased the vending machines, which cost around $5,000 each. JCPS will restock the machines one time, and then schools will be responsible for purchasing the books to place in the machine. It is expected to cost around $2,500 to $3,000 annually.
The schools will determine how students can earn gold tokens to "buy" books. Students could potentially earn tokens with good grades, attendance, acts of kindness, birthdays, accomplishments or reading efforts.
According to a news release, each vending machine is stocked with a diverse selection of books suitable for elementary school students. JCPS plans to install more vending machines in schools next year.
JCPS students returned to class on Tuesday after spring break.
