LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools won't pursue a change to its start times for next school year, changing course after "careful review" with families, staff and others in the community.
On Friday, in a new recommendation from Superintendent Brian Yearwood, the district said it was proposing all schools would begin and end the day 20 minutes earlier, a "major topic" Yearwood has heard from principals and staff."
The full proposal is below:
- 7:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. would shift to 7:10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.
- 8:40 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. would shift to 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- 9:40 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. would shift to 9:20 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Yearwood said the change was particularly in response to the 9:20 a.m. start time, saying the district has heard about logistical and staffing challenges related to that later schedule.
The proposal was set to be considered Dec. 9 by the Jefferson County Board of Education, but Yearwood said Monday that the district will "pause and withdraw" the plan.
"While the intent was to strengthen student learning conditions and improve operational efficiency, it is clear that more analysis and deeper engagement are necessary before moving forward," he said.
Yearwood said district leaders will spend the next few months to explore other options and get more feedback to "support strong instructional outcomes and protect a healthy work-life balance for our school-based employees."
