LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools wants to move every start time up 20 minutes starting next year.

In a new recommendation from Superintendent Brian Yearwood, all schools would begin and end the day 20 minutes earlier, a "major topic" Yearwood has heard from principals and staff, a district spokesperson said Friday.

The full proposal is below:

  • 7:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. would shift to 7:10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.
  • 8:40 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. would shift to 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • 9:40 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. would shift to 9:20 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For decades, JCPS had just two start times. But due to transportation issues stemming from a bus driver shortage, JCPS changed to nine different times for the 2023-2024 school year. The district then consolidated to the three current times starting in 2024-25. That change was largely successful logistically, with students getting to school on time more consistently.

This new proposal will be presented to the Jefferson County Board of Education at its Dec. 9 meeting. If approved, the new times would go into effect for the 2026-27 school year.
