LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A middle school teacher in Louisville was taken to the hospital after she was hit by a car during an outdoor learning experience early Tuesday.

In a letter sent to Barret Traditional Middle School families, principal Amy Strite said a science class was outside for a hands-on learning experience when a ball rolled into the roadway. A teacher went to retrieve the ball and was in the crosswalk when a vehicle hit the teacher.

Strite said the driver didn't see the teacher.

The teacher was taken by an ambulance to the hospital, and was conscious and talking when the EMS arrived.

Strite said some students saw the incident occur. School counselors are working with the students to provide support.

"We want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to support everyone affected by this event," Strite said.

JCPS spokeswoman Carolyn Callahan said "we're happy to say the teacher is out of the hospital" in a written update emailed to the WDRB Newsroom early Wednesday morning.
