LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Southern Indiana school districts that switched to eLearning Tuesday after several inches of snowfall had to change their eLearning plans after an internet outage briefly disrupted assignments.
Some of the first reports about the Spectrum outage in southern Indiana came in just after 9 a.m. So families and some instructors had to resort to using hotspots to continue their assignments.
Districts shifted to remote learning Tuesday after several inches of heavy, wet snow fell in southern Indiana and Kentucky, causing slick spots and hazardous travel conditions. Most areas received anywhere from three to five inches.
The outage affected customers in Clark and Floyd counties. Both school districts changed their remote learning plans from live instruction to aSynchronous learning, with teachers posting assignments for students to complete. Families received the following message alerting them to the change:
"Due to widespread internet outages, today's eLearning is now asynchronous. Teachers will post work to Google Classroom, and students complete work as best they can. There are no live Google Meets."
Spectrum customers received the following email around 10:30 Tuesday morning:
Service Alert
Hello,
We have detected an outage affecting your Spectrum service. We apologize for the inconvenience of this repeat service interruption. Our crews are working to fix the disruption and estimate that your service will be restored by 2:30 PM.
You can expect to hear from us every two hours until the outage is resolved. You'll receive your next update by 12:30 PM.
There is no need to contact customer service during the outage, as these communications include the latest updates.
A subsequent email received by Spectrum customers at 11:10 a.m. stated that service was fully restored, but cautioned that there may be "intermittent issues while we perform the additional work required to fully restore the outage for all affected customers in your area."
Several Jefferson County residents commented on Facebook that they're service was also out. So far, JCPS officials have not reported any problems with students completing NTI assignments.
