LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many school districts around Kentucky and southern Indiana said they'll decide early Tuesday morning on whether school will be in session as winter weather head toward the area.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday with mixed precipitation and up to 2 inches of snow.
Here's a rundown of local school districts' protocols for calling school off and what that could entail:
Bullitt County Public Schools
BCPS has two main types of snow-related days:
- Traditional Snow Day: made up at a later date
- NTI Day: students will learn virtually at home
The district said any call will hopefully be made by 5 a.m.
It's also prepared for NTI with a balance of live instruction and independent work. The district says every student has a laptop that was sent home on Monday.Ā
CarrollĀ County Schools
School administrators monitor weather reports, blogs and social media posts from meteorologists from the National Weather Service Wilmington office, which includesĀ CarrollĀ County.
Administrators also watch Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati area meteorologists to get an overall picture of the forecast for the region.
Mark Willhoite, the CCSĀ Chief Operations Officer said,Ā āWe definitely err on the side of caution to be safe.ā
āIn theĀ countyĀ there are certain areas we know to be troublesome,ā he said, so those roads and regions are almost always checked before a decision is made. Local law enforcement and emergency management also assist with updates on road conditions.
āWe try to decide as early as possible if school will be canceled, but unfortunately, there may be times that a decision cannot be made until early in the morning,ā Willhoite said,Ā
Once school is closed, a message will be sent to all staff and families via text, email and phone call. The information is also shared on social media, school websites as well as radio and TV stations.
The school district has 10 NTI days to use.

GCCS says it's monitoring the weather and will make a decision Tuesday by 5:30 a.m.
A message will be sent by 6 a.m. alerting families to a delay or closure. There are two possibilities if the weather dictates a change to the schedule:
- Plan 1: Two Hour Delay
- School will begin two hours late. Buses will run two hours later on their normal routes.
- Afternoon dismissal will remain the same.
- If you child attends a morning only preschool program, the morning session will be canceled.
- There will be no AM Prosser transportation. PM will tun on normal schedule.
- Plan 2: Schools Closed
- No school will be open that day. This will be an eLearning Day.
- School will be open the next scheduled day unless another closing announcement is made.
- Preschool students will not attend, no eLearning day.
Hardin County Schools
HCS says during inclement weather, its staff are on the roads no later than 3:30 am. HCS monitors the forecast hour by hour.Ā In addition, the district checks the air temperature and the road temperature to anticipate icing conditions.Ā District officials also stay in constant contact with state and local transportation officials about the condition of the roads and meteorologists from the National Weather Service about the weather and any potential changes.Ā Ā
The district says its students have access to Chromebooks in case NTI is needed.Ā Ā
If school is canceled or delayed due to weather, the district says a decision will be made by 5 a.m. or 5:15am at the latest, with notification going out by 5:30 a.m. via social media, media outlets and phone calls to parents.
Jefferson County Public Schools
CarolynĀ Callahan, Chief Communications Officer for JCPS said, "We are in communication with Metro Public Works and the National Weather Service, just like we whenever there is a forecasted weather event." She said, "Our teams check the roads when precipitation begins and then very early in the morning. Once we have any information to provide, we will share it with our families and staff, and then social and local media."
JCPS posts official announcements on the homepage of its website,Ā Facebook pageĀ andĀ X (Twitter) feed,Ā and through theĀ School MessengerĀ alert system whenever school is canceled or a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) day is used because of bad weather. In addition, local television and radio stations broadcast announcements.
The district takes multiple measures to ensure that our decision is best for our students. These measures include:
- Continually speaking with the National Weather Service, which has the most accurate and advanced technology in the country.
- Driving through all areas of the city before students arrive at bus stops.
- Assessing accumulations of snow and ice at our schools and other facilities.
- Monitoring the HVAC systems within our schools to ensure they are working properly.
- Monitoring traffic conditions throughout the city with the support of Louisville Metro Government and JCPS Security staff.
After this process is complete, JCPS staff makes a recommendation to the superintendent, who makes the final decision to close schools.

This year, there are two different "snow day" scenarios at NAFCS:
- Traditional Snow Day ā Make-Up Day
- There is a possibility, depending on the intensity and number of weather events, that they'd made up the school days at a later time. The Traditional Snow Days could be made up during the days spelled out in the NAFCS School Calendar; This year those days are highlighted as: Spring Break Snow Make-Up Days (March 16-20, 2026)
- ELearning Day
- Asynchronous eLearning Days (Posting of Assignments): On these days, students can complete assignments and lessons independently, with guidance and resources provided by their teachers. This format offers flexibility for families who may face challenges with internet access or scheduling during the day. The state currently only allows three of these a year.
- Synchronous eLearning Days (Live Instruction): On these days, students will engage in live, real-time lessons with their teachers via virtual platforms. This format allows for interactive instruction and immediate support but requires families to have reliable internet access during school hours. The IDOE mandates that over 50% of the day students/teachers would have to be connected to active/live instruction. The IDOE places no "day amount" limits on these days, but they do require a great deal of planning and oversight.
Oldham County Schools
Oldham County Schools says it plans to do NTI, if school is canceled Tuesday. NTI includes remote communication with teachers- and independent learning.
School closings and delays are posted on the school's website and social media sites as soon as possible. An alert is also sent to Infinite Campus Messenger, but than can be delayed.
There are two kinds of weather-related days off:
- Traditional Snow Days, which require the use of make-up days
- NTI Days, which are counted as regular school days and are not made up on the school calendar. ā
- Asā āaā ādistrict, āā10ā āNTI āDaysā āper āyear are available for health or safety reasons.ā ā
- On NTI Days, elementary Enrichment Centers will be closed.
On Traditional Snow Days, they may open at 8 a.m. or be closed for the day. The message you receive will indicate this decision. The message received in the event of inclement weather will indicate whether OCS will utilize a Traditional Snow Day or an NTI Day.
