LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Some Jefferson County Public Schools students got a first-hand look of the future of medical machinery.
Thursday, UofL Health hosted students from Waggener Health Science Academy to take part in the Thoracic Oncology Mobile Experience at Medical Center East on Dutchmans Lane.
The mobile experience is contained in a 56-foot-long 18-wheeler traveling all over the country, showing off innovative robotics and other advanced tools used to treat cancer in the chest and lungs.
The "robo-truck" allows surgeons to hone their skills in essentially a demonstration lab on wheels filled with several different surgical tools.
"I think the technology provided certainly makes us more accurate, and we can go after things like smaller lesions which certainly leads to better outcomes for patients potentially less invasive procedures, less pain, better recovery, treating lung cancers early which obviously leads to better outcomes and long-term survival," Matthew Black, UofL Health doctor, said.
Waggener students also learned how each machine can treat cancer.
