SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Ohio couple moved to Shepherdsville in the hopes of giving their young children a better life, but that dream has taken a detour since their apartment caught on fire.
The fire broke out last Monday at the Shepherdsville Village Apartments. No one was home at the time, but nearly everything inside couldn’t be salvaged.
Pictures of the aftermath of the fire show a mess of chaos. Ash and debris covers the floors, and the walls and ceilings now reveal beams and insulation.
“It was kind of hard to see that in front of me,” Kaitlinne Guy said.
Guy and her fiance moved to Shepherdsville a year ago with their 5-year-old and 11-month-old children. They left family in Ohio behind.
“(We moved) to kind of give our kids a better life," Guy said. "So when we moved here, we were living out of a hotel with nothing and everything that we had. We had just gotten established."
She said for two days after the fire, she couldn't get in contact with the complex to figure out their next steps. To this day, she still doesn’t have many answers.
“What's going to happen?" she asked. "What are we supposed to do?”
The complex didn't respond to a request for comment.
But with the future unknown, Guy said she still has a grateful heart.
“Everyone in this community has been so helpful to us,"she said through tearful eyes. "They've helped us with paying for our hotel and food and clothes for my kids. I'm just so thankful for all the help I've been getting thus far."
And looking at her kid’s faces keeps her strong.
"Everything happens for a reason," Guy said. "This happened for a reason. There was a reason we weren't home. There was a reason that this happened to us. And we feel like in the grand scheme of things, God has a better plan for us."
The Shepherdsville Fire Department said the fire is still under investigation.
