LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Golf fans filled Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville for the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday.

Xander Schauffele won his first major championship, making a birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the Wanamaker Trophy, along with setting a record score for any major championship.

There was plenty to cheer for throughout the sun-filled Sunday.

"This is what I pictured, but it's actually quite a bit bigger, better than I ever expected," said Jared Johnson, who attended the final round of the PGA Championship.

Schauffele is 30 years old, a California native who turned professional in 2015. Over that period, he played in 27 major championships without finishing better than second.

"The fact that Xander has been so close for so many tournaments, it was great," a man from Missouri said to WDRB News. "He is every man's man."

After Schauffele sank the winning putt, cheering went on for about five minutes.

"They over did it," Nick Borders said. "This is absolutely perfect."

Other fans were rooting for Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world. On Friday morning, Scheffler was arrested and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer and three other counts after he allegedly disregarded traffic directions while driving to the course.

While some people drove or flew from around the country for the golf tournament in Louisville, the course was also filled with locals.

"There have been so many local people here supporting the event, so that's been really exciting," Jamie Johnson said.

Locals had a rooting interest in the tournament as St. Xavier graduate Justin Thomas competed in his hometown. Thomas needed a big round on Sunday to content for his third major title, but couldn't quite deliver. Thomas finished tied with Scheffler at 13-under for a four-way tie for eighth place.

"I was glad to see him get it turned around a little bit cause you could see the crowd following him and that's exciting for him I am sure," Gary Welch said.

No matter where the fans stood or who they rooted for, the crowd was thankful to watch the professionals play in person.
