Fire breaks out at Riverview Towers in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A fire broke out Thursday night at the Riverview Towers in New Albany.

Fire trucks and ambulances surrounded the public housing tower around 7 p.m., and the truck's ladder went up to where the fire started on the 14th floor.

The Jeffersonville Fire Department was called in for mutual aid to help. However, New Albany Fire officials would not answer questions, instead deferring them to the New Albany Housing Authority.

A spokesperson for the housing authority also offered few details, but said the fire was contained to a single unit.

This summer, a couple of fires caused the tower to lose air conditioning and then all electricity. That forced hundreds of residents to stay in hotels until power was restored.

Residents didn't have to evacuate the building Thursday night, however. One tenant said they were being kept in the building's community room until the building had the all-clear.

There's no word on a cause yet, although NAHA officials said it wasn't electric and didn't cause the building to lose power. Fire officials said it's under investigation.

No one was injured.
