LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department's former deputy chief of police is now the head of the department guarding the nation's Capitol.

Michael Sullivan was named chief of the U.S. Capitol Police Wednesday, June 4.

Sullivan's career in policing began with the Louisville Division of Police in 1995.

Following the department's transition to the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2003, he rose through the ranks to serve as deputy chief from 2016-19 under then-Chief Steve Conrad.

In 2019, he left LMPD for a deputy police commissioner job in Baltimore, and was most recently the interim police chief in Phoenix.

"The Board is confident in Chief Sullivan's experience, leadership, and approach in protecting the Congress as an institution to ensure the legislative process is unimpeded," the U.S. Capitol Police Board said in a statement announcing Sullivan's appointment.

Sullivan will be sworn in as chief of Capitol Police June 30. The department's last two chiefs have resigned after reports of security lapses following the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol.
