Grant to Cedar Lake lets it provide more independence to its clients

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local care provider for intellectually challenged adults took a big step forward Monday in an effort give its clients more independence.

A $1.22 million grant from U.S Housing and Urban Development to Cedar Lake lets it build more residential style homes. It's an opportunity for those residents to be able to live independently.

Some don't have family they can depend upon or would otherwise not be able to afford this type of housing.

One resident we're identifying only by her first name, Melanie, tells WDRB News, "The best thing about this place is, I'm sharing it with seven other girls and we get along and we joke and provide each other with comfort and support."

As Cedar Lake President and CEO Chris Stevenson explains, "This means the world to them. They can work independently, they're able to catch a bus line and go shopping at the malls across the street. It's really the best scenario possible."

The money also helps pay for the newest technology and more training for staff members.
