LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Work is underway on the newest addition to Louisville's parks system.
Local and state officials broke ground on the first phase of Windsor Park Friday morning, a nearly 11-acre project in southwestern Jefferson County that includes green space, a spray ground and restrooms. It could open as early as this summer.
The site, off Lamborne Boulevard between Third Street Road and the Gene Snyder Freeway, is near the Louisville Loop trail and abuts 28 acres owned by the Metropolitan Sewer District, which also transferred the land for the new park.
Metro Council member Khalil Batshon, R-25, said the addition of Windsor Park is "huge" for the surrounding area.
"We can have an opportunity to make another walking path that goes all the way through. We've looked at a couple different options," he said, adding that the park could become "really an outstanding and a destination park for the entire city of Louisville as a whole and definitely for the South End."
The first phase is being funded by $500,000 in American Rescue Plan money and $700,000 from the current Metro government budget.
The project began under Batshon's predecessor on the council, Democrat Amy Holton Stewart, in 2022.
