LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A fight between two students at a Jefferson County Public Schools high school sent one student to the hospital with a broken jaw.
In 48 hours, Chenell Purifoy has moved to three hospitals with her son, a senior at Southern High School.
"My son is laying in a hospital bed with a broken jaw," Purifoy said.
Purifoy said her son was involved in a fight at school on Tuesday during passing period.
"You opened a door to a classroom of seniors and you turned your back and you did not watch them," she said.
Purifoy said her son's head was slammed into a desk chair, and that likely broke his jaw.
"He couldn't talk at all," she said.
After that, Purifoy said her son walked out of the school and past the front office, with no resistance from staff, despite him visibly bleeding.
JCPS said a safety administrator tried to stop her son from leaving.
"Why would you let him walk out the door? Why?" Purifoy asked. "As soon as you see him, 'aye, sit your butt down, regardless of how sick you are and how hurt you are or how mad you are sit down.'"
Purifoy said her son walked down Preston Highway to Thorntons. That is where she met her son and saw his injuries.
"His jaw was hanging off his face and bleeding," she said.
Purifoy said her son called to let her know he was in a fight and seriously hurt. She said a cashier from Thontons also called when her son arrived.
"The school never called me to tell me my son got into a fight," Purifoy said.
Purifoy said she was frustrated she had to call the school first.
"I don't have a filter when it comes to my children," Purifoy said. "I'm sorry, I don't, the mama bear comes all the way out."
JCPS said the principal is aware of the situation and that the families of involved students were called and talked to administrators.
But for Purifoy, it's not enough.
"Why wouldn't you stop him, why would you let him walk out the door?" she asks.
She hopes JCPS will take more accountability.
"I just want my baby to feel safe, he doesn't feel safe," she said.
