Indiana's gas tax holiday set to expire Thursday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Hoosiers are just days away from seeing their gas prices higher than they've been in months.

Indiana's gas tax holiday is set to expire this Thursday, Aug. 6, nearly four months after Gov. Mike Braun first suspended the tax in April. Since then, he has extended the tax three times, totaling 120 days, the maximum amount of time a governor can declare or extend a gas tax before needing special legislative approval.

The suspension is expected to have saved Hoosiers about 62 cents per gallon.

According to AAA, Indiana currently has the cheapest gas in the U.S., averaging $3.58 a gallon for regular fuel. That's lower than the national average of roughly $4.08 as of Tuesday.

Braun has not yet announced any plans to seek legislative approval for another extension, meaning Indiana drivers will need to plan for higher costs at the pump come Thursday.
