LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Gov. Mike Braun extended Indiana's gas tax holiday Thursday for the third — and what could be the final — time.

The extension means both the gas usage tax and excise tax are now suspended another 30 days. The current suspension was originally set to expire July 7.

According to Indiana state law, the governor can only declare or extend a gas tax through a 120-day period. Braun would need special legislative approval to extend it again.

Braun first suspended the 7% gas usage tax on April 8 for 30 days. It was extended for another 30 days on May 6, and then again June 3.

The suspension is expected to save Hoosiers about 62 cents per gallon.

"Affordability is my top priority," Braun said a news release. "I am once again extending these gas tax savings to make life more affordable for Hoosier families. Hoosiers will be able to celebrate 250 years of American independence this Fourth of July with the cheapest gas in America."

According to AAA, Indiana has some of the cheapest gas prices in the country, averaging $3.58 a gallon.
