LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Dozens of people gathered in a southern Indiana town to protest ICE detention in the state.
Protesters met at Warder Park in Jeffersonville for a vigil before marching to the Clark County Jail. Clark County Detention Center has been accepting federal Immigration & Customs Enforcement detainees since April of last year.
Many held signs calling for an end to ICE detention in Indiana. The Indiana Organizing Project helps coordinate the rally along with Do Something Southern Indiana.
"We all have the same concerns about people being detained in Indiana and in our jails without really having due process and being kept for unjust reasons," said Carolyn King with Do Something Southern Indiana.
Shannon Stone, a board member with Do Something Southern Indiana, says around 150 people attended the vigil.
This comes as protesters have rallied in support of the release of 21-year-old Armelle Bondonga, an immigrant woman being held at the Clark County Jail after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Bondonga has been detained for more than two weeks. The Department of Homeland Security said her presence in the U.S. is unlawful, but her legal team said DHS is misconstruing the facts. Bondonga was completing her final interview on Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the process of getting her marriage-based green card when she was detained by ICE and separated from her husband and 1-year-old son.
"We're also against ICE picking up people who have the papers they need who have been doing everything the right way, such as Armelle Bondonga," said King.
According to Do Something Southern Indiana, 63 marches, rallies and vigils took place across the state including in Madison, Indiana.
