LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The JCPS school board decided Monday night how the district will make up at least some of its snow days.
The board had one more day to deal with after JCPS closed schools again Monday. It was the eighth snow day so far this year.
Last week, the calendar committee recommended that Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 be makeup days, with school in regular session on both days. The school board approved that plan with a 5-1 vote.
With the school board voting to use the two make-up days later this month, the last day of school is set for June 9.
However, any further snow days would be added to the end of the year.
Some board members expressed concern with the proposed makeup dates, because many parents were counting on those days off.
"I have to think about the parents that already have non-refundable reservations and they were working off the good faith of this board that we weren't going to mess with these days," said board member Chris Brady.
Schools will be asked to be flexible with parents about the schedule changes, said Michael Raisor, the JCPS Chief Operations Officer.
"Our heart goes out to those families that aren't going to be happy with our decision and were going to encourage our schools to make every accommodation we can," said Raisor.
JCPS students have attended class for only three, full, five-day weeks since Thanksgiving.
According to the board, students now will have a full week at school just before mandatory state testing the first week of March.
It said no to school on primary election day because many schools are polling places. The group also rejected an initial suggestion of ending the school year on June 9.
The calendar committee includes parents, teachers, transportation workers and maintenance crews -- more than 40 people with a vested interest in the school calendar.
