JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) --Â Christmas may still be months away, but one southern Indiana nonprofit is already getting into the holiday spirit.
Childplace Family Services in Jeffersonville launched its annual Christmas fundraiser with a goal of raising $50,000 to provide holiday gifts and support for the roughly 40 children in its care. The organization serves children who are in state custody — many of whom have experienced abuse, neglect or separation from their families.
"We want kids to be able to be kids while also working through some really hard things," said Melissa Wilson, clinical director at Childplace. "Some of them will come here and tell us this is the first time they've had a Christmas morning where they've had gifts under their tree."
Each child at Childplace creates a wish list, and staff work to make sure they receive meaningful, personalized gifts — including something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.
Wilson said the $50,000 goal not only funds the holiday gifts but also helps cover emergency needs throughout the year — like clothing, supplies or facility updates.
Helping to make the fundraiser possible is Clark County Auto Auction, a longtime partner located just across the street. The business hosts events throughout the year and matches all donations dollar for dollar.
"We can help them have a normal Christmas like we used to have — where you have gifts and a dinner and a stocking," General Manager Paul Fetter said. "And that's really special."
Last year, the auto auction presented Childplace with a ceremonial check for more than $50,000 raised through community donations and matched contributions.
