LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A planned shutdown of the Kennedy Bridge, scheduled for this Friday night and Saturday morning has been postponed.
According to a news release, crews will instead focus on applying high-friction surface treatment (HFST) to the I-65 ramp. That means additional I-65 ramp closures will be in place next week for striping operations related to the high-friction surface project.
The bridge was closed last Friday (Nov. 14) as crews worked on the ongoing expansion joint repair project. That's when engineers discovered they need to take additional measurements of the steel bearings for further analysis before continuing repairs and scheduling additional overnight bridge closures, according to the release.
More overnight closures of I-65 South to complete repairs on the right side of the bridge will be scheduled after the assessments are finished. New closure dates will be shared once they've been confirmed.
The latest adjustments are not expected to impact the upcoming I-65 Central Corridor project or its detours.
Crews continue to work on repairing the southernmost expansion joint, on the right side of the bridge. The ramp from I-65 South to I-64 West closed Nov. 18, and will remain closed through Monday, Dec. 15.
The next phase of the expansion joint replacement project will affect the left three lanes, which will be closed during construction.
Nov. 23 Ramp Closure
The postponement of this weekend's overnight interstate closures on the bridge means additional ramp closures will be needed for crews to complete secondary work associated with the recently installed (HFST) on I-65 South, just past the Kennedy Bridge. Crews will be applying permanent striping on the I-65 South to I-71 North ramp on Sunday, Nov. 23, requiring a closure from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Additionally, the I-65 South ramp to Jefferson Street/Downtown will be closed Monday, Nov. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Currently, the right three lanes and right shoulder of the Kennedy Bridge continue to remain closed for ongoing construction. They are expected to remain closed through December, and the ramp from I-65 South to I-64 West is expected to remain closed through Monday, Dec. 15.
