LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More cancer survivors in Kentucky now have the opportunity to donate blood after Kentucky Blood Center updated its eligibility guidelines.

The change means people who have completed treatment for certain cancers, including organ cancers and melanoma, may now be able to donate just one year after treatment ends.

Dr. Dennis Williams, KBC’s medical director, said the decision follows medical research and federal guidance showing blood donation remains safe.

"There is no evidence that cancer can be transmitted through blood transfusion," Williams said in a news release. "This update allows more people to help save lives while maintaining the highest safety standards."

Patients who have had cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow or lymphatic system will still not be eligible to donate. Some cancer medications may also prevent donation, and standard health requirements still apply.

The updated rules are already in effect at Kentucky Blood Center locations statewide.
