LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky National Guardsman who became a hero in Afghanistan will be honored tomorrow.
Captain Shannon Ison will be awarded the Silver Star during a ceremony in Louisville.
It comes after his actions in Afghanistan in 2008. Under enemy fire, he left the safety of his cover to pull wounded soldiers from a truck that hit a bomb. While he was carrying a soldier, a rocket propelled grenade landed near them. He treated the injured man, then led his platoon to fight back.
The Silver Star is the military's third highest award for valor and is given on the order of the President of the United States.
