LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is proposing changes to make Bardstown Rd intersections safer, and the designs are open for public feedback.

The cabinet’s goal is to enhance safety on Bardstown Rd between Taylorsville Rd and U.S. 60A in the Highlands.

A 2018 Bardstown Rd Safety Study concluded that this corridor had one of the highest concentrations of pedestrian crashes in Louisville, with an average of nine pedestrian strikes per year.

Where Bardstown Rd meets Douglass Blvd to Dundee Rd, KYTC wants to construct a single lane roundabout, add new crosswalks and three parking spots.

On Bardstown Rd at Rutherford Ave and Village Dr., KYTC plans to eliminate the eastbound right turn lane and tie the westbound Rutherford lane into Blvd Napoleon.

It also wants to add a total of eleven northbound parking spots, while removing nine southbound ones, as well as reconstruct the Blvd Napoleon and Rutherford Ave intersection with U.S. 31E.

From Taylorsville Rd to Trevilian Way, KYTC wants to add new north side pedestrian crossings, and change the lane configuration on U.S. 31E to two northbound lanes, a dedicated left turn lane and one southbound lane.

For all intersections, KYTC is planning to add curb extensions.

Emily Parker, a Highlands resident, doesn't know what will help the traffic, but wants a solution.

"I think there's a lot of traffic here," Parker said. "It's definitely gotten busier the last few years. I think that we definitely need some kind of better traffic solution."

Parker also thinks the roundabout will help with traffic and pedestrian safety.

"There’s a lot of them in Bloomington and it helps there,” she said. “I feel like, with so much traffic here on the weekends, it could definitely be a helpful thing."

One pedestrian told WDRB News that he doesn’t think a roundabout would improve safety, saying it’s already hard to cross at those intersections, and he can’t imagine a roundabout would help it.

Anyone can share their feedback on the changes through this survey until Aug. 14.

According to KYTC’s website, construction is currently scheduled for 2028.
