LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police Department brought some holiday cheer to the south Louisville Wednesday by hosting a festive community event they called "Reindeer Games."
The event, held at the Hillview Walmart, featured games like spinning a prize wheel, rolling dice, and attempting to land a pingpong ball into a muffin tin. For nearly two hours, officers played with kids, socialized with families, and spread holiday spirit by listening to Christmas music, and even holding a shopper’s snake.
“This is what we call Reindeer Games,” LMPD Seventh District Resource Officer Tonya "Rocky" Landry said.
The initiative, supported by Walmart’s donation of gift cards through the LMPD Foundation, offered a chance for officers to interact with the community in a positive and lighthearted setting.
“It’s not just about handing out gift cards,” Landry said. “We get to connect with the community, have fun and share some goodwill.”
The kids were especially thrilled with the games, often preferring candy prizes over gift cards. Officers noted that every interaction with children and their parents is a meaningful opportunity.
“So many times, we’re involved in people’s lives during their toughest moments,” Landry said. “Events like these allow us to build relationships, answer questions, and foster a sense of trust within the community.”
Sixty people walked away with $25 gift cards, and shoppers like Francis Newton were grateful for the surprise.
“I’m gonna spend it today,” Newton said with a laugh after receiving one of the last gift cards.
For LMPD, the event was about more than just prizes. It was a chance to show the community the “serve” part of “serve and protect.”
“This is the best part of our job,” Landry said. “It’s on our patch; we’re here for service. And this is what service looks like.”
