LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Emergency Services personnel will now have blood in their ambulances for trauma victims, city leaders announced Tuesday.
Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the new initiative alongside city health care leaders Tuesday morning. Trauma victims, those involved in serious car crashes and victims of gun violence typically do not get blood until they reach the hospital.Â
Dr. Jason Smith, an emergency room doctor at UofL Hospital, said during a news conference Tuesday that this simple procedure will save lives.
"The sooner we can transfuse someone, the better their chances are of living through their trauma." Smith said.
Louisville is the first city in Kentucky to offer this service.
