LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Plans could move forward to build another Costco in Louisville if Metro Council passes an ordinance Thursday. The ordinance will change a portion of the properties zoning from residential to commercial and change the form district from neighborhood to suburban marketplace.
“It will be a thriving area that can only create spin off and positive influence for commercial retail and residential,” said District 10 Councilman Steve Magre.
Plans to build a Costco on the 19-acre lot were filed in March. It would be the second store in Louisville. The proposed 153,000 square-foot store would fill a long vacant space along Bardstown Road where Showcase Cinemas once stood.
The store would be just steps away from the Economy Inn, which has been a source of contention in Magre’s district.
“There's probably no area that receives more concern from other business people and from my constituents that are residents than right next door to here,” said Magre, referring to the Economy Inn.
In late June, Magre called on the mayor to get involved with problems at the motel. The owner, Tony Yaldo, has insisted he’s cleaning up the place. But Magre thinks having one of the largest retailers in the country nearby will force change.
“It's like the giant has finally come that we needed to make great impact,” he said. “And that's an area that needs to be impacted, no question.”
Magre is confident the ordinance will pass. If that happens, it will go to the mayor.
In July, Costco officials said work on the store could begin by next spring. The store could open in late summer or fall of 2016.
