LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Construction will begin next week on a roughly three-year project aimed at improving Interstate 64 in southern Indiana.
The Improve 64 project in Floyd County is part of the Indiana Department of Transportation's effort to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along the I-64 corridor from the State Road 62/64 interchange to the Spring Street interchange in New Albany.
"This project is gonna be a big deal once it's done. We're doing all new pavement between Main Street and (U.S.) 150, on (Interstate) 64, so that's a pretty decent stretch. Along with that pavement, we're widening the lanes. So, going from two lanes to three. It's gonna be a big deal," INDOT spokesperson Gary Brian said Tuesday. "We're looking to help with congestion, we know a lot of folks coming in from the Indiana side to the Kentucky side and back, you know, to work and back and forth we're hoping this helps to address that congestion."
INDOT is in the early planning stages of adding lanes on Interstate 64, between Cherry Street and U.S. 150 in both directions. The plan would also improve ramps and add lanes to Interstate 265.
Right now, INDOT said "insufficient freeway capacity" around the I-64 and Interstate 265 interchange is leading to congestion during peak hours, slow travel speeds and aged pavement conditions.
To combat these issues, the project will add a lane in each direction of I-64 from U.S. 150 to Cherry Street.
Additional travel/auxiliary lanes are planned on I-265 from State Street to I-64. Other work includes interchange improvements, such as the reconfiguration of the I-64 and I-265 interchange, as well as:
- Bridge, pavement and culvert replacement and rehabilitation
- Drainage improvements
- Additional signage
- Pavement markings
- Noise barrier installation
- New guardrail and concrete barrier wall installation on parts of I-64, I-265 and U.S. 150
Brian said work also includes widening lanes on several ramps, including ramps on the I-265/I-64 crossover and one of the ramps going to U.S. 150.
"This project is gonna be high-impact, it's gonna be something that folks are going to be enjoying for decades to come, having three lanes," he said. "You know, I think it's gonna be transformative for this area."
Starting Monday, July 13, INDOT officials said drivers can expect some overnight lane closures and restrictions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in these locations:
- I-64 from West Spring Street to U.S. 150
- I-265 from the I-64 interchange to Green Valley Road
- 0.5 miles from the I-64 interchange to Old Vincennes Road on U.S. 150
As work gets underway, INDOT said drivers can expect narrowed shoulders, lane shifts and intermittent lane restrictions this year.
"It's gonna be good in the end but we understand in the interim it's gonna be, you know, can be frustrating," Brian said. "At INDOT, we're working to try to mitigate some of those issues, you know, working at night when we can. But really, the importance would be, you know, plan for it, watch social media accounts, watch the news, you know, when these new closures will be coming and plan your route."
Transportation officials said their traffic data shows between 55,000 to 77,000 vehicles travel the corridor daily, increasing closer to the state line with the highest traffic amounts near Spring Street and State Line Road.
"This little stretch handles a lot of traffic, handles a lot of folks coming from Indiana to Kentucky and back," Brian said. "We want to make sure that we're being good stewards, making sure that this is the best it can be."
Construction on the Improve 64 project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
