LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police sounded the alarm Wednesday about a trend its seeing in suicides.
The city has seen 40 suicides so far this year, compared to 19 homicides.
"This is the first time, that we can recall, that we've had more suicides than we've had homicides. It's an epidemic," LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said during the department's bi-weekly press briefing.
LMPD is encouraging the community to look out for one another and help those in need.
Because guns are the leading method of suicide, police said using gun locks and storing guns in a safe could be the extra step that saves a life.
If you, or someone you know, are experiencing feelings of suicide, help is available. You can call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988, or via live chat at 988lifeline.org, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
