LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A murder investigation in Middletown took a shocking turn after police discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) underneath the victim’s car.
Authorities say 43-year-old Brandon McQuillen is accused of shooting and killing his father, 65-year-old John McQuillen. However, police believe he had a backup plan if the gun didn’t work.
Investigators say the device found under John McQuillen’s vehicle was "potentially viable" and could have detonated at any time. When asked if more explosive devices were found, police declined to comment further.
John McQuillen had moved into his condo just months ago, according to Lonnie Thurman, president of the homeowners association. Thurman recalled conversations with the victim about his troubled relationship with his son.
“He told me about his fractured relationship with his son and that he had threatened to kill him,” Thurman said.
Court records show both father and son had previously filed emergency protective orders against each other, highlighting a long-standing conflict.
Neighbors reported seeing a black and white van—described as a converted ambulance—around the area in the days leading up to the shooting. Police say that van belonged to Brandon McQuillen.
Concerned about safety following the shooting, the neighborhood is now working to increase security measures. Residents have invested in Flock security cameras, which will be installed in the coming weeks.
“This is a quiet neighborhood,” one resident said. “I never thought something like this could happen here.”
