LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 65-year-old man was identified Thursday morning as the victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday in Middletown.
The Middletown Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to reports of gunfire and a person lying on the ground at 7:30 a.m. on Winter Springs Court. Police said the victim was initially taken to UofL Hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 65-year-old John McQuillen. He died of a single gunshot wound.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that McQuillen was a reserve deputy who served the agency for more than 10 years until his retirement in July 2021.
As they were processing the scene, officers also found a "suspicious package" on the scene, and LMPD's bomb unit rendered the package safe.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public, but officers located a Chevrolet Box truck Wednesday afternoon that they believed may be connected to the case. LMPD said the person driving the truck was considered a person of interest and the truck may contain an "explosive device."
