LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man was charged with murder and DUI after police said he crashed into a TARC bus stop Monday evening in Shively while drunk, killing one person and sending two to the hospital with critical injuries.
The Shively Police Department said officers responded to an injury collision around 7:56 p.m. at the intersection of Rockford Lane and Dixie Highway.
When officers arrived, they found a woman dead at the scene. Another woman was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. A third woman, believed to be in her late 20s, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two other people at or near the bus stop at the time of the crash suffered minor injuries, police said.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim Monday as 43-year-old Danielle Cordes.
Investigators said the driver of one of the vehicles involved, 45-year-old Kevin D. Moore, was arrested and charged with DUI and murder.
According to an arrest citation, Moore was charged with murder, disregarding a traffic light, criminal mischief, two counts of assault, two counts of wanton endangerment, two counts of assault with minor injury, DUI and reckless driving.
Police said an officer was on patrol when they saw two vehicles with severe damage stopped in the northbound lane near the intersection of Dixie Highway and Rockford Lane after a crash that had just occurred. Several victims on the sidewalk and grassy area on the northbound side of Dixie told officers they were hurt in the crash.Â
"I heard a loud crash. It was crazy," said Isaac Stokes who lives nearby and rides the bus nearly daily. "There was an older vehicle right here where I guess the whole front end just gone."
The officer who initially responded to the scene wrote in Moore's arrest citation one victim was "obviously deceased" from "extreme injuries," while two others were severely hurt, with life-threatening injuries. Two others were hurt, "likely due to debris."Â
"Unfortunately it is just a very tragic event," Shively Police Sgt. Jordan Brown said. "Those kind of things happen very quickly and we don't want people to have to fear to walk down the sidewalk just to get to the bus stop."
Two passengers in one of the vehicles told police they weren't driving at the time of the crash, pointing to Moore as the driver. Police said Moore, who was sitting on the curb, told officers the accident "was not his fault even though he was drunk due to him consuming alcoholic beverages."Â
Police said Moore told them he had been drinking tequila an hour before the crash. That's when police noticed the strong smell of alcohol on his breath, noting that he was "uneasy on his feet," coming close to losing his balance and falling over. Police also wrote that Moore had slurred and forced speech.Â
Moore refused a field sobriety test, telling police he wouldn't perform it "because he knows that he is drunk and instead asked officers to take him to jail." Officers then took him into custody and transported him to Metro Corrections in downtown Louisville. At the jail, police said Moore again refused to participate in any evidentiary tests. A search warrant was drafted and signed for a blood draw.
Police said video captured on a surveillance camera at a nearby business showed Moore's pickup truck headed north on Dixie Highway at Rockford Lane and crossing into the intersection at a red light. The truck hit a passenger car that was turning left from the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway into the parking lot of the Bank of America.
After the initial crash, police said Moore drove onto the sidewalk and into a TARC bus stop where several people were standing. The TARC stop was also damaged in the crash.
In court for his arraignment Wednesday morning, Moore pleaded not guilty and a judge set his bond at $1 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 4.
The investigation remains ongoing.
