LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A mother-daughter duo of Sumatran orangutans recently joined the Louisville Zoo, the first new orangutans at the zoo in 28 years.
Sumaga, 38, and Kera, 7, came to Louisville from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Sumagu and Kera to the Louisville Zoo family," Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said in a news release Thursday. "Both are gorgeous, and we encourage every member of our community to come see our newest residents. This is a great time of the year to visit the Zoo during Kroger’s Wild Winter Days running now through the end of February. Bring a canned food item and receive a discount."
Sumagu and Kera will be on exhibit together at the Louisville Zoo, and they'll eventually join two other females, Bella and Amber.Â
Last year, the zoo's previous orangutan, Teak, died at the age of 36. Teak, a Sumatran-Bornean hybrid was being treated for a chronic respiratory illness.
