SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) -- An Indiana artist wants to honor Hoosier rocker John Mellencamp with a mural outside a Seymour arts center, but some local officials are concerned it would be "cheesy" and set a precedent for other artwork.

Kay Fox tells The Tribune she wants to create a mural depicting several images of Mellencamp. She says the mural would be attached to the exterior of a music store in downtown Seymour and could last 10 years if done properly.

She says the work would be a way to recognize Mellencamp for his contribution to the arts.

Planning commission member Mike Jordan says the proposal is "cheesy," but others say it could draw interest.

A city review board has tabled the plan until Fox can get permission from Mellencamp.
