LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city is cracking down on who can operate short-term rentals in Louisville.

During a meeting Thursday, Metro Council passed an ordinance that overhauls rules surrounding homes and apartments rented nightly on platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO.

The ordinance, which passed the council's Planning & Zoning Committee on Tuesday, Aug. 29, closes a loophole that allowed some property owners to operate rentals without a permit.

Now, if the property is not a person's primary residence, they'll have to get a permit.

"In a place that is your primary residence, you should be able to operate with maximum freedom," Councilman Ben Reno-Weber, D-8, said. "In a place that is not zoned for operating a commercial hotel, you should not be able to operate a commercial hotel."

The city also increased the fees for these rental properties from $100 to $250. It will use the money for new software and to pay a full-time staffer to enforce the law.
