LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) is reminding people how to keep plumbing in working order on World Toilet Day.

World Toilet Day is Nov. 19. MSD said people flushing inappropriate items can cause problems for plumbing in homes, businesses and MSD's sewer system and water quality treatment centers. Flushable wipes are an issue for MSD.

"Wipes do not break down, even if their labels read 'flushable,'" Daymond Talley, MS Deputy Chief Operations Officer, said in a news release. "They twist, becoming stronger in a mass, blocking sewer lines and damaging pumps."

According to a news release, wipes cause around 60% of the clogs that employees must repair. MSD said residents should not ever flush wipes, dental floss, hair, paper towels and tissues in the toilet.

MSD receives more than 156 million gallons of water and waste flushed down drains and toilets every day.
