UNDATED (AP) — The Texas Attorney General's office has notified the Big 12 of potential legal action from Texas Tech. This follows a court order allowing quarterback Brendan Sorsby to regain NCAA eligibility despite gambling on sports. The Big 12's executive board met Thursday to discuss options after a Texas court issued a temporary injunction Monday that prevents the NCAA from enforcing its ban on Sorsby. He had been ruled ineligible after betting on his own team while at Indiana. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says the board will meet Monday to decide on a course of action.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — West Virginia will make its first appearance in the College World Series on Friday when it meets Troy in Omaha, Nebraska. The Mountaineers' breakthrough came 15 years after former athletic director Oliver Luck decided against dropping the program when the school accepted an invitation to join the Big 12. West Virginia has gone from having some of the worst facilities in the nation for a major college program to now having some of the best. Luck credits former coach Randy Mazey and current coach Steve Sabins for turning the baseball program into a national brand.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A record five SEC teams are in the College World Series and the last six national champions hail from the conference. But it’s not just the same old, same old this year, not with Troy and West Virginia squaring off in Friday’s opener as first-time participants on college baseball’s biggest stage. North Carolina plays Mississippi in the other Bracket 1 game. Play begins in the all-SEC Bracket 2 on Saturday with Oklahoma meeting Alabama and Georgia facing Texas.
UNDATED (AP) — The controversy over gambling in college sports has intensified with Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's court victory. College players betting on their own teams is widely condemned, but resolving the issue is complex. This week, Nebraska and Georgia urged their coaches not to schedule games with Texas Tech. Meanwhile, the Big 12 is debating its response. The case highlights the challenges of regulating college sports, especially with legal sports gambling widespread and lucrative sponsorships involved. Without legal protections, the NCAA struggles to enforce rules, leaving the future of college sports governance uncertain.
