LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Residents of west Louisville have a new affordable housing option.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning for the newly constructed PortShaw Place Apartments. The 38-unit complex, located near 39th and West Market streets in the Shawnee neighborhood, includes on-site parking and 24/7 security monitoring.
"Whatever anyone else's hopes and dreams are for themselves and their family, they cannot do it if they don't have a safe quality and affordable place to call home," Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said at Friday's ceremony.
When the project was announced, it was designed for more than just housing. In July 2024, the city said the families who would eventually call the complex home would also get wraparound services. Those services will include tutoring for school children or GED studies, financial literacy lessons and help transitioning to becoming a homeowner.
REBOUND Inc., the Louisville Urban League, the Portland Memorial Baptist Church and a $5 million investment from the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund helped make this project happen.
Greenberg also declared Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, as PortShaw Day in honor of the grand opening.
