LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A celebration was held on Sunday to honor 25 years of protecting animals.

The Animal Protection Association hosted its 25th anniversary at its new shelter on Hamburg Pike in Jeffersonville. On Sunday, the shelter was dedicated to its founding members.

APA's mission is to rescue and find homes to forgotten cats and kittens around Kentuckiana. The no-kill shelter strives to give every treatable cat a second chance.

The shelter has more than 30 adult cats and 60 kittens available.

"It's really important for people to stop by the local shelters, we are all full," said Denise Koenig with Animal Protection Association. "I feel confident I can speak for all the shelters in the area that we are more than full with adult cats and kittens. We have some cats here that would absolutely make a wonderful addition to your family."

The group is in the middle of a $100,000 fundraiser to pay for the shelter's mortgage.

"Anything people can do to volunteer or donate to the shelter helps us greatly," said Justin Franklin with Louisville Metro Animal Services. "Donating to our friends Friends of Metro Animal Services. Again, we are your city shelter and we are here to serve the community of Jefferson County."

Adoption fees for the animals were waived for those who attended the event.
