LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A beloved member of the Bardstown, Kentucky, community passed away over the weekend.

Oreo the Bardstown Fire Dog passed away Saturday at 8 years old, according to a post on her Facebook page.

"She was the happiest, sweetest, and most social girl who loved her people and her community," the post read.

Oreo first reported for duty in October 2018 at the Bardstown Fire Department, where she served as mascot for four years before her retirement in 2022.

"She enjoyed her retirement and kept her spark and joy," the post continued.

Oreo was named by local elementary school students and was believed to be the first fire dog in the department's more than 100-year history. She served as an ambassador for the department, tagging along for school trips and more.

"We miss her tremendously and always will. Life will be empty without her presence and sweet Dalmatian hugs," her family said.

Oreo's family hopes she's "greeted playfully" by her German Shepherd brother, Koa, who passed away last year.
