LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new public art installation honors and commemorates Black Louisville elders who have impacted the community.
Several people gathered and sang at the Louisville Riverwalk near 9th Street. The Unknown Project debuted "Our Elders' Footprints" featuring the footprints of activists, educators, civil rights leaders and artists.
The installation is located adjacent to On the Banks of Freedom which was unveiled in summer 2021 on Juneteenth overlooking the Ohio River.
"It's a momentous occasion because I am one of the youngins with so many elders who have been doing this for years - the footprints I stand in and shoulders I stand on, I am privileged to be part of them," event participant Rhonda Mathies said.
The installation was made possible by support from Mellon Foundation, Louisville Metro Arts and Creative Industries and Fund for the Arts.
