LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in southern Indiana are warning local businesses and residents of "washed" counterfeit bills.

The Paoli Police Department said it's received multiple reports of washed $100 bills.

"Washed" bills are genuine bills, usually $1 or $5 bills, that have been stripped of the original ink.

The blank currency is then reprinted to look like a $100 bill. Washed bills often show the original $1 or $5 security strip when held up to the light.

The watermark should be a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. A washed bill may show George Washington or Abraham Lincoln instead.

If you come across one, police say not to return the bill to the person who handed it to you. Instead, call Paoli police immediately at (812) 723-2836.
