LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A semitruck carrying U.S. Army ammunition caught fire on I-65 North early Tuesday, prompting officials to shut down the northbound and southbound lanes.Â
According to a social media post from Bartholomew County Sheriff Chris Lane, the semi was carrying approximately 300 howitzer rounds when it caught fire near the 58 mile marker. An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was sent to the scene to make sure the munitions are safe.
The fire happened not long after four vehicles were involved in a separate crash near the 56 mile marker around 6 a.m.Â
The interstate was expected to be shut down both directions from the 64 exit in Bartholomew County to the 55 exit in Jackson County until close to noon, according to Lane.Â
