Prayer service held for critically injured teen swept away into drain pipe

LYNDON, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 15-year-old boy is still in critical condition after he was pulled into a drain pipe full of rushing water.

Family and friends came out by the hundreds Sunday afternoon, filling St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church to pray for 15-year-old Davey Albright’s recovery. Trinity High School says he’s a sophomore student at the school.

Father Bill Hammer said Albright is an active member of his parish.

"They're a part of our family,” Hammer said. “When anything happens in anybody's family, everyone wants to gather around and support and that's what we're doing today."

Police say Albright was pulled into a storm drain behind Melissa Drive off North Hurstborne Parkway Friday evening. Neighbors say the teen was playing with his younger brother in their backyard when he slipped and was swept away.

First responders found the teen unconscious in a yard about 100 yards from where he disappeared into the drain.

"It was very shocking to hear someone that you've known forever could have this happen to them. Especially someone as good as Davey,” Nick Nopper said.  “It's just sad."

Nopper says he and Albright have grown up together and he visited him in the hospital Sunday before the prayer service. Hammer says Albright is in the ICU. A spokesperson for Norton Children’s Hospital confirmed the teen was still in critical condition on Sunday.

Hundreds of people packed St. Margaret Mary for the prayer service. Holding their rosary beads, Albright’s family, friends and classmates filled the pews to show their support.

"Once he is out of that hospital I'm going to be right there with him," Longtime friend Luke Burch said.

The service was planned with very little notice, and still, large crowds of people filled the church. Parents, teenagers, parishioners and members of the Trinity community bowed their heads in prayer.

"We can't crowd into the intensive care unit that he's in,” Hammer said. “There's no way for hundreds and hundreds of people to do that. But we can crowd together here and then send that prayer with them."

It was an overwhelming show of support for the teen and his family.

"I hope he has a full recovery and everyone is praying for him,” Nopper said.
