LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Some drivers stopping for gas Thursday morning in Kentuckiana saw an increase at the pump after an overnight jump in prices.
Data from GasBuddy shows that gas prices in Indiana were 85 cents more Thursday than they were last week.
Some people at the pump said they don't know if they'll be able to afford another spike.
"It's terrible," said Andrew Khime. "I gassed up on Monday for $3.40 and the next day, Tuesday, it went up to $4.20. It went up 60 cents in one day in Sellersburg, that's where I live."
These days, Khime said he only pumps what he can afford.
"That's what I could afford, $22.12," he said. "Almost can't even afford to put a full tank of gas in your car anymore, but you need it."
Gas at the Meijer in New Albany was up to $4.19 on Thursday. When asked how he felt when he saw the increase in gas, Khime said he was "speechless."
"I thought they made a mistake," he said. "I couldn't believe it, and with me DoorDashing and driving a lot, it's really taking a toll on how much money I make."
Khime is just one of many who are feeling the pain at the pump.
"I remember, during the Obama administration, the most I ever paid for gas was $4.46, and now I'm thinking I might be setting a new record very soon."
According to gas price alerts posted on X by GasBuddy's Head of Petroleum Analysis, Patrick De Haan, prices are predicted to get worse. Live data shows the national average hit $4.35 per gallon Thursday, which is the highest gas price since 2022.
De Haan sent out a spike alert Wednesday warning that prices appeared to be rising to $4.99 at some gas stations in Indiana.
Lynda Lambert, with AAA, said there are a few reasons prices are spiking.
"The ongoing conflict in Iran, the issues with the Strait of Hormuz, and now we're seeing several refineries in the Midwest having either power outages or some sort of disruption," Lambert said.
She added that one refinery in Indiana and two in Illinois are having issues.
"Combined, those three refineries produce more than a million barrels of crude oil per day, so that can definitely have an impact on prices in our entire section of the country," said Lambert.
GasBuddy data shows that every single state in the U.S. has higher gas prices as of Thursday compared to a week ago.
