LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are asking the public to tell their children that officers are there to help solve violent crime.

It was part of a public safety forum held Tuesday evening on gun violence.

LMPD said oftentimes when teens get shot, victims refuse to talk to them and say to them, it's none of their business.

City officials said that while events like Tuesday's may not fix all frustrations when interacting with police, they can help build relationships.

"And wants the crimes to be solved, doesn't want there to be anymore shootings or murders, and has acknowledged that we have a very big gang problem here in our community," Deputy Mayor David James said, adding that these events also help victims find support.

The forum was hosted by Metro Councilmembers Tammy Hawkins, D-1, and Jecorey Arthur, I-4. Mayor Craig Greenberg's office, Youth Transitional Services, Group Violence Intervention, LMPD, Jefferson District Court, and the Jefferson County Attorney's office were also in attendance.
