LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Samuel Watkins Jr., a longtime West End leader and former head of Louisville Central Community Centers, died at 83.

According to the organization, Watkins died Friday, March 20, in Phoenix, Arizona.

Watkins spent nearly three decades leading the organization, where he focused on expanding opportunity and driving investment in west Louisville, particularly in the Russell neighborhood.

His legacy in Louisville is most visible in the Old Walnut Street campus, a 110,000-square-foot mixed-use development in West Louisville at 13th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

Built in one of Jefferson County’s most economically challenged areas, the campus includes the Grand Lyric Theatre, a business incubator, family strengthening center and LCCC’s corporate headquarters.

The Grand Lyric Theatre was one of Watkins’ final visions before his retirement from LCCC. The 330-seat performing arts venue will host his memorial service at his request.

"I am eternally grateful for Sam’s mentorship and his trust in me to carry his vision forward," said Dr. Kevin E. Fields Sr., LCCC’s current president and CEO.

Watkins retired in 2017 and later moved to Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Judith "Judy" Watkins, and their family.

Memorial arrangements have yet to be announced.
