LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It can happen to anybody, but the Better Business Bureau isn't an easy target. Â Â
It was a call about a free medical alert device and a free gift card, but instead of talking to a senior citizen, an alleged scammer had actually contacted the Better Business Bureau.
The person on the phone promised to send the goods after a short survey.
"There really wasn't a survey, he just says would you like a hundred dollar gift certificate, or would you like a free vacation voucher or 4 or 5 different things," said Joe Spalding, Director of Charity Review, for the Better Business Bureau.
You can imagine his surprise when he received a call on his business line from someone saying he had won a free medical alert device and gift card.
Spalding said the person on the other end of the phone gave himself away the minute he asked for a credit card number to pay for the small shipping fee.
He also said the caller did not give up easily, and can only imagine how difficult it is for real senior citizens who receive those calls. "And then he kept being persistent.  'You mean, you're turning this down.' Then I believe he said they were online with Visa and Mastercard and that they would never jeopardize whatever relationship they had by trying to take $1.99 or whatever."
The Better Business Bureau is looking into the company. So far they've only been able to trace the phone number and business to Florida.
