LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Ten years ago, a Louisville man watched his mother die outside their home, after being shot.

"My mother was loved by a lot of people, my mother raised a lot of people around Louisville," Philip Thomas said.

It was December 8, 2004 when he pulled into his driveway on Camden Avenue in South Louisville and two men tried to rob him. Philip's mother, Shirley Ann Thomas, and girlfriend, Jutta, were home at the time and walked outside.

"It was a situation where they both were shot, my mother was shot and actually killed that night," Thomas said. "I literally held her 'til her last breath."

A decade later, Philip and Jutta are married with three kids. Two men have been convicted of Shirley Thomas' murder but the healing process continues for their family.

Thomas has organized a vigil in his mother's memory for Monday on the same block where the shooting happened. He says he wants to bring awareness to homicide victims and "do something in her name to keep her spirit going." He says he'd like his mother remembered in a good way.

This will be the first step in a bigger effort, according to Thomas. He's invited city leaders, the homicide lieutenant who solved his mother's case and others who have lost a loved one to murder.

"This is also a way for us to get a hold to other people that feel like me, that have had feelings like me as well," he said. "For us to network and communicate with each other to see if there's anything we can do to help each other out."

Thomas says eventually, he hopes to start some sort of support group.

The vigil is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 8, in the 900 block of Camden Avenue.
